SKY RIVER
Ceramic, glass, wire, and screw eyes
Permanently Installed in a children's safety center, 2023
When I first visited the children's safety center that commissioned this work, there were thousands of hand prints decorating the walls. Each child who visited had painted their hand and left a permanent record of their visit. When I looked closely at these prints, it stood out to me that many were horizontally striped in vibrant colors. Sky River is an answer to a fantastical question: what if the stripes on these prints took off and flew away? What journey could they take together? I built many of the stripes out of ceramic but in order to pay homage to the colors of the originals I chose to use glass. Thousands of stripes of glass were slumped in hand built ceramic molds to make the wavy forms.
